Deacon's Diary

Deacon's Diary for Sunday-November, 29th

Deacon's Diary is a weekly feature that appears on the back side of the bulletin at the First Baptist Church of Avalon, Texas.

Gratitude-next exit.

Most of the time my deliveries go to the same old places.  I'll leave Ft. Worth with stops on the truck that I have been to many times before. So I get into a pretty regular routine. Most of the time.

But every once in awhile one will come along that is off of the beaten path. A special delivery that might go just about anywhere. And it will also need to get there in a hurry, and it will be out of the ordinary. Out of that routine that I am so used to being in.

I got one of these a couple of weeks ago. A rush order to Idabel Oklahoma. Never been there before, so I got it mapped out before  I left and headed out in a hurry. It shouldn't  have been a problem at all because Idabel is not that far off the road to Little Rock, AR.

But I did have a little problem on the way there. I guess I got so used to running in my regular routine that I missed the exit that  I needed to take from I30. Just drove right past it! I got about ten or twelve miles up the road before I realized the mistake. And to make matters worse, I had to go another ten miles or so to find a place to turn around. Not a good situation when people were waiting for me to get there with that special delivery on the truck.

In much the same way we as human beings run the risk of the same thing happening to us next week. The Thanksgiving Holiday comes with a set of routines that all us have become accustom to. The preparation and/or travel that we do every year is something that we have gotten used to over the years. A kind of beaten path of sorts. But each of us are carrying a special delivery of thanks to God. Let us not forget to exit our routines just long enough to show our thanks to Him. It's not that far out of the way. God is waiting.
