Deacon's Diary is a weekly feature that appears on the back side of the bulletin at the First Baptist Church of Avalon, Texas.
In the beginning.
Today is Sunday July, 5th. This day falls right between two very important dates for us Americans, and for all of us as members of this church as well.
I don't have to remind any you about the first one. Yesterday was July 4th. We all know what that date is and what it means to us. We all know it. Just like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, and all of the other signers of the Declaration of Independence knew all too well.
You can read it their words and phrases like, 'we hold these truths to be self-evident", and "all men are created equal", and "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights", and, finally, "with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence". It is clear. They knew then what we know now. There are certain rights that God has given to all of His created that should never be taken away by any other man, or by any form of government.
Now, about that other date. July, 6th. Tomorrow. Another birthday for all of us to celebrate, because on that date 130 years ago Josiah Leake and S. C. Talley along with 16 charter members started a church. This church. Once again, they knew then what we know now. They knew that there is not only an existence of a great and awesome God, but that God deserves all of our love, devotion, and worship. What they started here 130 years ago continues today.
While both of these celebrations go back a long time ago, there is something about them both that has not, and can not, ever change. Both are startups of different sorts, but both of them have a common principle. The founding of the country and the founding of this church rely on the same basic principle.
That principle being the existence of absolute truth. Absolute truth is not changeable. It is a constant. No need for updates. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow it stays the same. It remains. It endures. Whether a person believes in it or not is of no consequence. Absolute truth is just that. It is THE TRUTH.
So while today may have fallen in between the celebrations of two important startups, when it comes to their basic principles, there can be no in between.
