Deacon's diary is a weekly feature that appears on the back side of the bulletin at the First Baptist Church of Avalon, Texas.

Talking rocks?

It was a wonderful vacation to Sedona, Arizona. The scenery was nothing less than breathtaking. The time with friends and family was nothing less than priceless. And while it's good to be back home, that break from the every day grind was nothing less than right on time.

On the way out there I couldn't help but to notice that this area of real estate has been the inspiration for such things as calendar pictures and movie sets. In other words, I have seen some of this place before. Just never so up close and personal. I have heard about it's beauty. But had never seen it for myself before. Even though some of the pictures are very good, take it from me, they still can't really give that place its due.

The rock formations and boulders also reminded me of other things I have seen since my childhood. Things like the "Roadrunner" cartoon. I suspected that this place was inspiration for the back drop of that, too, and my suspicion was increased the second day we were there. Not two blocks from the where we were staying I saw a roadrunner. I didn't see a coyote though. I figure he was still trapped under a rock from his latest failed attempt to catch that witty and wily roadrunner. Or maybe not.

On the way back we stopped and took a picture of some of us standing on a corner is Winslow, Arizona. As you may have guessed, it was a fine sight to see. But saw no girl in a flat-bed Ford. I guess the eagles got her.

Finally we went to see that great big hole that they call the "Grand Canyon". In the parking lot the license plates on the cars told the story of how people from all across the country came to see some of God's best work. We even saw a group of tourist from Nepal there. The words awesome and beautiful are just not quite good enough to describe it.

Our vacation reaffirmed what the Bible says. This world we live in was wonderfully made by an awesome and wonderful God. I heard the rocks.
